David Miller, from Jersey, USA and 23 year old Hannah Witheridge from Hemsby England was raped before being murdered, both battered bodies were found on a beach on the island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, a popular diving destination in 2014.

The accused and convicted murderers Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo, were recently among many convicts in Thai prisons whose sentences were reduced under a clemency decree issued by King Maha Vajiralongkorn to mark his 68th birthday on July 28.

The decree, which appeared to cover thousands of prisoners, took effect on Friday with its publication in the Royal Gazette.

Their killers, who were both 22 at the time, were employed as service workers on the island appealed the sentence. The Supreme Court in August last year upheld their murder convictions and sentences. It dismissed allegations of physical mistreatment and mishandling of forensic evidence, saying the work was handled by respectable institutions and it found no proof of torture.

The death penalty is rarely carried out in Thailand.

Between 2016-2018 60 British backpackers were found raped and murdered in Thailand, many of these deaths are unsolved due to poor resources of the Police departments,

Thailand is one of the worst in the world for fatal road incidents with a rising trend of accidents year on year.

From 2015 to 2018, 13,861 patients died, including 11,177 bikers. The injured (reported) amounted to 265,243. Of the 265,243 injured 210,963 were motorcyclists.

    . 2015: Injured: 62,773 Dead: 3,509

    • 2016: Injured: 63,981 Dead: 3,486

    • 2017: Injured: 67,517 Dead: 3,440

    • 2018: Injured: 70,972 Dead: 3,426

These audited figures indicate the trend of a rising road death toll.

In the same period, the number of pedestrians injured was 10,672, with 916 killed. Senior pedestrians were the highest fatality bracket, with the figure dropping for younger citizens. Of the dead and injured, most involved motorcyclists.

Thailand is a beautiful country, but like all countries the hidden facts should be sought before venturing to this country or any other country around the world. Too many young people dies before their lives get started, information and common sense really can keep you alive and make hiking around the world, a great experience.
